There’s no co-op mode, but that would defeat the point. For instance, one brother must slide through some railings to trick an opponent, while the other pulls a lever at the right time to entrap him. Immortal LifeĪll of this is achieved by utilising the brothers together. You’ll need to distract a barking dog in order to run past it or sneak up to a guard to steal a key that will release a prisoner. There’s no inventory, and everything is much more environmentally-driven. This isn’t your traditional adventure game puzzle-solving. Together they must work together to traverse the land and overcome its obstacles. The younger of the two is cheekier, rocking a woman’s chair and sticking his tongue out at people, while the elder is more serious and less musically talented. When it comes to playing around with the surroundings, their personalities shine through their actions. Each boy has his own abilitiesįor example, the older, brown-haired brother can jump higher, while the shorter, blond brother can squeeze through small gaps. He collects the Water of Life, but as he returns to the bottom, he finds that Naia has already died from his injury. Nearing the end of their journey, the brothers reach the Tree of Life Naia insists that Naiee venture on to reach the top of the tree. Once inside, she reveals herself as a monstrous spider and while trying to eat Naia, the brothers manage to thwart and kill her by pulling off her legs but not before she mortally wounds and stabs Naia. The girl assists them on their journey, and begins seducing Naia, tricking the brothers to enter a cave, much to Naiee’s dismay. The brothers save a girl from being sacrificed by tribesmen. They help others along the way – reuniting a troll couple, saving a man attempting suicide, and aiding an inventor. The brothers embark on their journey through the village, hills and mountains, while facing challenges like the local bully, a farmer’s aggressive dog Black One Blood BrothersĪnd deadly wolves. His older brother, Naia, calls him to help their ill father reach the village’s doctor, who in turn tells them the only way to save him is by collecting the water from the Tree of Life. The story begins with a boy named Naiee standing at the tombstone of his dead mother, who drowned at sea while he was unable to save her. One must be strong where the other is weak, brave where the other is fearful, they must be… Brothers. They must set out upon a journey to find and bring back the “Water of Life” as they come to rely on one another to survive. His two sons, desperate to cure their ailing father, are left with but one option. NPCs will have different reactions when interacting with each brother, where sometimes only one of the brothers can get specific information from specific NPCs. There is also action buttons respective for each brother. The player controls each brother with one of the analog sticks, allowing to move each character freely and individually. They must overcome obstacles and solve puzzles by working together. Gameplay is based around the two brothers helping and assisting each other to overcome the challenges of the world. All of the in-game dialogue is spoken in a fictional language based on Lebanese Arabic, thus the story is conveyed through actions, gestures and expressions. Should either brother fall from a great height or get injured, the game restarts at a recent checkpoint. The player progresses by manipulating the two brothers at the same time to complete various puzzles, often requiring the player to manipulate both brothers to perform differing functions (such as one distracting a hostile non-player character while the other makes their way around). The older brother is the stronger of the two and can pull levers or boost his younger brother to higher spaces, while the younger one can pass between narrow bars. The controller triggers cause the respective brother to interact with the game world, such as talking to a non-player character or grabbing onto a ledge or object. The brothers are moved individually by two thumbsticks on the controller. Gameplayīrothers: A Tale of Two Sons is presented from a third-person view overlooking the two brothers. A few game-breaking bugs in the initial Xbox 360 version and a slightly tricky control scheme dampen the experience, but not enough to stop this unique adventure from earning a resounding recommendation. While the actual challenge on offer is minimal, the story is so strong, the lands traversed so beautiful, the music so enchanting that the lack of difficulty is not an issue. Developed by Starbreeze Studios, this is a truly wonderful tale that masterfully immerses you in an emotionally rich, fantastical setting. I’ve never played an adventure game that handles both concepts with such a deft touch as Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. They bring people together, they tear them apart.
